Several waterfalls are within a days hike. This includes DeSoto Falls, Dukes Creek Falls, Horse Trough Falls and the twin cascades at Helton Creek Falls. In addition, you’ll find many opportunities for camping, hiking, picnicking, gold panning and fishing.
Outdoor Activities
For the water lovers, Union County offers many lakes. The largest being Lake Nottely. Nottely is 4180 acres with a 106 miles of shoreline. There is also Lake Trahlyta. The popular 280 acre lake in Vogel State Park. Lake Trahlyta offers swimming, fishing and paddle boating. Two smaller lakes are Winfield Scott and Lake Woody near Suches.
Rather drive then hike? For the less adventurous, there is the Richard Russell Scenic Highway. This 14 mile stretch of road crosses the Appalachian trail. It offers scenic overlooks at elevations over 3600 feet. A must see during fall foliage. Also check out the Southern Highroads Trail and the North Georgia Farm Trail. Most noteworthy is Brasstown Bald. Georgia’s highest elevation just outside of Blairsville in Hiawassee Georgia .

North Georgia Technical College is a 5.5 million dollar facility. The school teaches health care, computer science, in addition to hotel/restaurant management. This 45,000 square foot structure has state of the art classrooms plus labs and meeting facilities. It incorporates the latest technology in every program. North Georgia Technical College is a public school of higher education. It’s serving the workforce needs of Northeast Georgia. The college offers associate degrees, diplomas, and adult education. Especially relevant is their online business and industry training. Therefore the school allows for a flexible personal schedule.
