Bordering North Carolina, Hiawassee Georgia in Towns County with the townships of Hiawassee Georgia and Young Harris Georgia, has been blessed with an abundance of environmental resources. Its name is derived from the Cherokee — or perhaps Creek — word Ayuhwasi, which means meadow.  Lush Forest are teaming with wildlife and sparkling streams abound throughout the county. With 106,240 acres in the county, 57,503 acres are part of the Chattahoochee National Forest.

With an approximate population of 9319 residents in the whole county (according to the 2000 census), the largest concentration is in Hiawassee Georgia with 637. The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds hosts the Georgia Mountain Fair each summer. The Anderson Music Hall at the fairgrounds hosts great shows with top name stars each year. Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge, bursts into bloom early April to late May and can almost take your breath away at the sight of more than 3,000 azaleas and rhododendrons

Hiawassee Georgia  is the county seat and the larger of the two communities of Hiawassee and Young Harris Georgia. It is a scenic town surrounded by the mountains of Georgia and North Carolina while overlooking the 7000 acre sapphire-blue waters of Lake Chatuge. With a 128 miles of shoreline this pristine lake is ideal for fishing, swimming, boating and camping. Hiawassee Georgia  shares the shores of Lake Chatuge with neighboring Hayesville, North Carolina.  The 18 acre Bell Mountain was recently donated to Towns county by the Hal Herrin Family. Now named the Hal Herrin Scenic Overlook

A local hangout for hang gliders and other sports enthusiast for years. Bell Mountain has spectacular 360 degree mountain views that now can be enjoyed by young and old alike.  A paved yet steep road to the top with ample parking opens up to a mountain top decked with wooded steps  and decks to enjoy this eagle perch view of the  beautiful North Georgia mountains.
