Hiawassee Georgia

Towns County Georgia has two towns Hiawassee Georgia and Young Harris Georgia. They border North Carolina. Both towns are blessed with an abundance of natural resources. Hiawassee is derived from the Cherokee ( or perhaps Creek) word Ayuhwasi, which means meadow. Lush Forest are teaming with wildlife and sparkling streams are throughout the county. With 106,240 acres in the county, especially relevant is the 57,503 acres of the Chattahoochee National Forest.

The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds hosts the Georgia Mountain Fair each summer. The Anderson Music Hall at the fairgrounds has concerts with top name stars each year. Furthermore Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge, bursts into bloom early April to late May and can almost take your breath away at the sight of more than 3,000 azaleas and rhododendrons. With this in mind spring time is a great time for a visit. Come see the greening of the mountains.
Lake Chautge and Scenic Overlooks
Hiawassee Georgia overlooks the 7000 acre sapphire-blue Lake Chatuge. Because of it’s 128 miles of shoreline this pristine lake is ideal for fishing, swimming, boating and camping. Hiawassee Georgia shares the shores of Lake Chatuge with neighboring Hayesville, North Carolina. One of the lakes most notable qualities is the majestic mountains that surround it.
Bell Mountain is a must see Hiawassee destination. It was recently donated to Towns County by the Hal Herrin Family and is now called the Hal Herrin Scenic Overlook. The 18 acre park is a local hangout for hang gliders and other thrill seekers. Bell Mountain has breath taking panoramic views. Now accessible to young and old alike. The road to the top of the mountain is paved. It’s steep but has a lot of parking. Also they have built many decks and wood steps to enjoy this eagle’s view. As a result one of the view decks has wheelchair access. So despite the steep drive up everyone can enjoy this beautiful park.
From rustic cabins to executive estates, Towns County has something for everyone and then some. Visit the enchanted mountains and valleys of Young Harris, and Hiawassee Georgia in the North Georgia mountains.
